Advanced Automatic Number Plate Recognition System

Recognizing the vehicle number plates is a much needed system. This system is already applicable in so many countries but we want to make some advancements in it. So here we are proposing a vehicle number plate recognition system that automatically recognizes vehicle number plates using image processing. We will set a zone or the area, when the vehicle is entered in the parking area the camera automatically detect its number plate. The camera will also detect the type of vehicle, make and model. This will serve as a new benchmark in security systems as well as automatic toll deduction mechanism.

Project Proposal


1. High-level project introduction and performance expectation

Identifying the number plates of a car is a much-needed process. This program is already working in many countries but we want to make some progress in it. So here we suggest an FPGA-based recognition system that automatically detects car license plates using image processing.

We will set the location, where the car is placed in the parking lot and the camera automatically detects its number plate. The camera will also detect the Car type. Such as, the vehicle is a car, motorbike, rickshaw, or any type. We will be doing this work in two provinces Punjab and Federal so by reading where the plates also tell us which province this car belongs to.

The camera will also create a customizable excel sheet that records car numbers and records the details of the day and if we want a record for a particular car we can simply find the record by simply placing its plate number on the sheet. Camera output will be visible online by sending data over the Internet or WIFI. We will  also make an algorithm that counts the vehicles while Entering in parking Lot . We wil  also place an LCD display in the parking lot which tells us how many parking space is left.

Why Using FPGA?

FPGA is much better and Faster than all Processors we have seen like in Ardiuno case it is the simplest form of Processor on which we can do only small Projects and we knows that we can't campare FPGA to Arduino and same as Raspberry Pi .while we have seen that FPGAs are often used on implementation platforms for real-time image processing applications because their structure is able to exploit spatial and temporal parallelism. The approach used is a windowing operator technique to traverse the pixels of an image and apply the filters to them. As image sizes bit depth grow larger, software becomes less useful and real-time hardware systems are needed to take their place and we knows that FPGA clock rates are on the order of 100 MHz to 200 MHz

3. Expected sustainability results, projected resource savings

This project is very useful and applicable from many perspectives. Such as by making this project it is very useful in parking lots, toll taxes, and in highly restricted areas. ANPR technology is used to help detect crime at the local, regional and national levels. This project is very helpful in finding criminals because our project keeps the record of every vehicle in and out from that area where ANPR is used. 

In a parking system and toll takes, it becomes easy to maintain the record of vehicles and real-time data visualizing. By visualizing the data in real-time it becomes safer and we take action at any time.
